The technology known as "deepfakes"—amalgams of human images utilized through artificial intelligence—is seemingly suddenly everywhere. More than ever, these videos bring into question the validity of what we are viewing. In an era of active disinformation, that's a particularly dangerous prospect. What can we do about videos that attempt to manipulate us not only through inaccurate information, but doctored images? What is the potential impact of this technology, which is still in its infancy, on our daily lives? How could it affect our very democracy? When 44% of Americans believe the news to be inaccurate, how might deepfakes further erode trust in the media? What can and should we do about deepfakes?
